Distractions

  • Challenge: Easily distracted by classroom activity

  • Solution: Seat student front and centre, away from distractions


Attention-Seeking Behaviour

  • Challenge: Acts out to gain negative attention

  • Solution: Seat near a good role model


Personal Space

  • Challenge: Unaware of personal boundaries

  • Solution: Increase distance between desks


Assignment Accommodations


Time Management

  • Challenge: Unable to complete work within given time

  • Solution: Allow extra time to complete assignments


Assignment Quality

  • Challenge: Work quality decreases toward assignment end

  • Solution: Break long assignments into smaller parts; shorten assignments or work periods


Instructions

  • Challenge: Difficulty following instructions

  • Solution: Pair written instructions with oral instructions


Distractibility Accommodations


Classroom Participation

  • Challenge: Cannot keep up during discussions or take effective notes

  • Solution: Provide peer assistance in notetaking; encourage participation by asking questions


Engagement

  • Challenge: Finds lessons "boring"

  • Solution: Involve student in lesson presentation

  • Solution: Use private signals to help student stay on task


Work Accuracy

  • Challenge: Turns in work with careless mistakes

  • Solution: Schedule five-minute review period before submitting homework or tests

  • Solution: Ignore minor inappropriate behaviour

  • Solution: Increase immediacy of rewards and consequences

  • Solution: Acknowledge answers only when hand is raised, and student is called upon

  • Challenge: Needs positive reinforcement

  • Solution: Send daily/weekly progress reports home

  • Solution: Establish a behaviour contract

  • Solution: Recommend binders with dividers and folders

  • Solution: Allow student to keep a set of books at home

  • Solution: Allow running errands or standing while working

  • Challenge: Difficulty focusing long-term

  • Solution: Provide short breaks between assignments

  • Solution: Set social-behaviour goals with reward program

  • Solution: Encourage social interactions; plan teacher-directed group activities

  • Solution: Frequently acknowledge good behaviour and work
